Everything is bigger in Texas...;)

Von L.A. aus bin ich dann nach Dallas weitergeflogen, wo ich ehrlich gesagt aber überhaupt keine Zeit verbracht habe. Da es zu der Zeit kein Pre-Season-Game der Mavericks gab, hatte ich auch keinen Grund, dort zu bleiben. Ich bin direkt nach dem Flug mit dem Greyhoundbus nach Austin weiter gefahren, um dort eine gute Bekannte, die Mary, zu treffen, die ich in Wien kennen gelernt habe. Wir haben dort bei einer Freundin von ihr gewohnt, vielen Dank für deine Gastfreundschaft Kara, und uns zwei Tage lang Austin angeschaut. So hab ich einiges über die, neben dem Capitol, wichtigste Sehenswürdigkeit in Austin erfahren. Und zwar hat ein Sniper vom Tower der Uni aus vor ein paar Jahren an die 15 Leute erschossen, es leben die amerikanischen Waffengesetze... Über viele Umwege, fremde Student-IDs und Ähnliches hätten wir es fast auch noch zu einem College-Footballspiel geschafft, ist aber kurz vor Schluss doch noch gescheitert. Das war vor allem deswegen bitter, weil die Texaner wahnsinnig auf Football abgehen. In Austin spielen die Texas Longhorns und in Collegestation, wo ich später noch Zeit verbracht habe, spielen die Aggies von der A&M und die beiden Teams sind die schärfsten Rivalen. Während meiner Zeit in Austin hab ich neben vielen neuen Leuten dann auch noch den Vinh wieder getroffen, meinen Deutsch-Englisch Tandem-Learning-Partner aus Wien von der WU. Hat mich gefreut Buddy!

Dann bin ich mit Mary und zwei anderen Mädels nach Collegestation weiter gefahren, wo ich auch noch zwei Tage verbracht habe. Das ist wirklich eine richtige Uni-Stadt. Da gibt’s eigentlich nix anderes und typisch amerikanisch ist dort jeder so verdammt stolz auf seine Uni, so was hab ich in Deutschland noch nie erlebt und kann mir das hier auch ehrlich gesagt nicht vorstellen... Das ist definitiv eine andere Kultur und war sehr interessant, dass Ganze mal live zu erleben. Und natürlich sagt man als Europäer ja schon, dass in Amerika alles größer ist als in Europa, aber selbst die Amis sagen, dass in Texas nochmal alles größer ist... Dementsprechend könnt ihr euch vorstellen, dass der Spruch aus L.A. (There is no walking distance in...) in Texas definitiv auch greift. Abgesehen davon war es eine sehr schöne Erfahrung, zumal ich dadurch, dass ich schon Leute kannte, ähnlich wie in Singapur bei Kendra und Letitia, eher Kontakt zu Einheimischen hatte, was doch immer wichtig ist, wenn man das Leben in einem Land besser verstehen will, erst recht, wenn es bereits von so vielen Vorurteilen geprägt ist, wie das in den USA. Aber ganz ehrlich, viele der Vorurteile stimmen! Leute, ich weiß echt nicht, wie ihr euch auf Dauer so ernähren könnt...;)

Mary ich weiß, du hast dir vorgenommen, dass ich, wenn ich die USA verlasse, einige Pfunde zugenommen habe, und ja es hat geklappt. Ich hab seit ich 16 bin kein Gramm mehr zugenommen, aber das amerikanische Essen, besser bekannt als Fast Food (in diesem Fall als Synonym zu verwenden...;) ) hat es echt geschafft, dass ich 4,5 kg, also knapp 10 Pfund zugenommen habe... Und laut meiner Körperfettanalysewaage davon fast 2 kg pures Fett!!!

Ein Kapitel für sich war dann auch noch die Rückfahrt nach Dallas zum Airport. Von Collegestation fährt nur ein Greyhound am Tag, um 10 Uhr morgens, mein Flug ging 10:30... Der nächste Bahnhof war in Austin, zwei Stunden von Collegestation entfernt und der Flug nach Dallas hätte fast 200 Dollar gekostet und ich hätte schon am Nachmittag vorher abhauen müssen. Daher, typisch für die USA, musste ich mir tatsächlich ein Auto mieten, nur um meinen Flug nach Vancouver zu erwischen... Am Nachmittag zuvor waren wir dann noch zu einer Führung in einer Kelterei mit anschließender Weinverkostung, um danach in eine 1-Dollar-Margherita-Bar zu gehen mit dem Abschluss in einer normalen Bar mit weiterem alkoholischen Getränk. Gegen Mitternacht hab ich dann aufgehört mit trinken, da ich ja bald fahren musste... Zum Abschluss hat man mir unwissendem Europäer noch mit mässigem Erfolg versucht, Rockband beizubringen, also für die, die es nicht wissen, dass ist das Zeug, wo du mit irgendwelchen Plastikinstrumenten versuchst Songs nachzuspielen...;) Gegen 4 Uhr morgens hab ich mich dann, wohlgemerkt ohne eine Sekunde geschlafen zu haben, verabschiedet und bin mit dem Auto nach Dallas gefahren, wo ich nach 4,5 Stunden Fahrt inklusive 30 Minuten Nickerchen und Stau fahren im morgendlichen Berufsverkehr auch endlich völlig im Delirium angekommen bin...;) An Mary nochmal vielen Dank für die schönen Tage in Texas!

From L.A. I flew directly to Dallas, but to be honest, I didn’t spend time there. There was no Mavericks pre-season-game during this time and because of that no reason for me to stay there…;) After the flight I took a Greyhound to Austin to meet Mary, a good friend of my time in Vienna. We stayed at a house of a friend of Mary, thanks for hosting us Kara, and visited Austin for two days. So I got to know things about the most important sight in Austin next to the Capitol. A sniper shot about 15 people from the tower of the university a few years ago, so much to tell about the american rifle laws…;) With a lot of strange ideas and thoughts we were so close to visit a college football game, we already had other student IDs and stuff like that, but finally we didn’t make it. It was really a pity, because football is so famous in Texas, it is definitely the sport number one! In Austin the Texas Longhorns are the ones and in Collegestation, there I spent some time later one, the Aggies are playing. It is the team of the A&M and these two teams are big big rivals. During my time in Austin I also met Vinh, my German-English Tandem-Learning-Buddy from Vienna, next to a lot of new people. It was nice to meet you buddy!

After that I went to Collegestation with Mary and two other girls. I spent two more days there. This is really a college town. There is nothing else and typical American everybody is so proud of his university. I’ve never had anything like this in Germany and I really can’t imagine that this could happen here… This is definitely another culture and it was really interesting to get to know all this almost “live”. And as Europeans we say that everything is bigger in US, but also the Americans say that everything is bigger in Texas… So you can imagine that what we said in L.A. (There is no walking distance in...) also, or better especially, counts in Texas. Apart from that it was a really nice experience, especially because of knowing some people in advance, like it was in Singapore with Kendra and Letitia, I got in contact with a lot of locals and not only with travelers. This is really important if you want to get to know something about the life in a country, especially if there is so much prejudice like it is in the US. But to be honest, a lot of this is true! Guys, I have no idea how you can eat this stuff all the time…;)

Mary I know, your aim was to let me gain a few pounds until I leave US and yes it worked! I haven’t gained any pounds since I was 16, but with the help of the American food, better known as fast food (in this case used as a synonym…;) ) I really made it… I gained 4.5 kg, almost 10 pounds… And my body fat analysis machine also told me that I gained almost 2 kg pure fat!!!

Another chapter was my way back to Dallas Airport. From Collegestation there is only one Greyhound a day, at 10am and my flight was at 10:30am…The next train station (Amtrak) is in Austin, two hours away from Collegestation and a flight to Dallas costs at least 200 bucks and I had to leave the afternoon before. That is the reason why, typical American, I had to take a car. I really had to rent a car just to catch my flight to Vancouver…In the afternoon we went to a winery and did some wine tasting, after that we went to an one dollar margherita bar to finish with a drink in another bar later on. At midnight I decided to stop drinking, because I had to drive very soon…The last hours they tried to teach me Rockband, for the ones, who don’t know what it is, you have to play famous songs with the help of some fake plastic instruments…;) Around 4am without any seconds of sleep I had to leave and to drive my car to Dallas, where I arrived tired and sleepy after 4.5 hours of driving, including a half an hour nap and the rush hour in Dallas…;) Thanks Mary for the nice days in Texas!
